Because people invest their money in whatever is of their interest. I'm studying engineering and play sport at semi-competitive level and I'd rather spend $100 (or any reasonable amount for that matter) on watching a football game than donate it to some charity/inverstigation fund. The reason is really just because I like it more, I find it more enjoyable and believe I earned the right to enjoy myself after paying taxes and going to work. However, if I had to justify further I'd say that (at least in my country) science is actively supported through the government with tax money, while sports is largely left behind. TV rights and Sponsoring gets some money for major sports (football and basketball mostly), while minor sports (eg athletics, handball) get away only with entry fees for races/matches and club monthly fees.
