What is the best way to promote a restaurant?

I'm not sure there is one best way. For a new business, word of mouth and press coverage are good promotional methods. However, many established restaurants (and businesses) fail to connect and look after their existing customers. The best way to promote a restaurant is to remind past customers to come back.
