Synopsis

Many people have heard of Chi Kung (Qigong) but not as many have heard of Nei Kung. Chi Kung means "Energy Discipline". It refers to using breath and movement to draw Chi from the surrounding environment for health and healing. Nei Kung means "Internal Discipline" and it refers to methods of meditation, standing postures and subtle movements which stimulate the internal organs and energy meridians to stimulate and create powerful "nuclear" Chi from within the body.

The Shang Ch'ing Taoist tradition is known as the most mystical and powerful of the Taoist sects. For many years, the Shang Ch'ing initiates were know as wizards and sorcerers and were feared even by other famous Taoist sects. Recently ancient Shang Ch'ing manuscripts have been published by academic scholars and the Shang Ch'ing tradition is enjoying a resurgence of popularity.

In the Shang Ch'ing Taoist tradition, it is believed that the vast majority of Chi Kung is "layman" style energy work. The Shang Ch'ing energy work was primarily Nei Kung and was considered to be advanced energy work taught only to the highest monks and priests in the order.
